    On Growing a Friendship*

A long time ago, back when people would mass email surveys and stories to everyone on their mailing list because no one had even heard of social media yet, I read a story that stayed with me. I can’t remember who sent it to me, or the exact storyline, but essentially, it went like this: A young girl had just met the man of her dreams and was talking to her mom about it. She was dreaming about the things they would do and the life they would live, just the two of them. Her mother listened patiently then offered her daughter a little piece of advice: she counseled her…

    Five Years Later*

Sweet mother of pearl. I swear I don’t know where the last month went. The older I get (and the more kids I have) the faster time goes, and for the life of me I can’t get it to slow down. In the last few weeks our Weebean started school, Hank decided it was time to potty train, and our little prince is two months old. I feel a bit like I’m starting to come up for air after Prince Will’s birth. I am someone who really struggles through the first six weeks after having a baby… I don’t handle the lack of sleep, no established routine or excessive hormones…

Little Prince: A Birth Story* (Part 4)

Well, it’s been a busy few days around here. As much as I would have liked to have hammered out this last post a week or so ago, my hands have been a little… full. Will has been going through a series of growth spurts and has either been eating or sleeping on me pretty much non-stop. I had forgotten just how busy newborning is… Thank goodness he is awfully cute and lovely to snuggle. Our little Prince finally arrived at 5:38am on July 26th. I have to rely on the Hubster’s version of events for the first few minutes of his life as I was utterly exhausted and a…

Little Prince: A Birth Story* (Part 3)

After the rush of getting to the hospital and getting the room prepped, for the next hour or so, there was little I could do but breathe through each contraction and wait. This was a vastly different experience for me. In Hank’s labor, I progressed “slowly” (for me) through the early stages. It took me 3 hours or so to dilate to 6cm, and I did most of that at home until my water broke. Once I arrived at the hospital, things moved so quickly that it felt like I barely had time to get a gown on before I felt ready to push. I dilated 4cm in less than…

Little Prince: A Birth Story* (Part 2)

All three of my children are napping. In their own beds. AT THE SAME TIME. (*cue hallelujah chorus*) Since I have a few minutes, I thought I would keep plunking down our little Prince’s birth story while everything is still fresh in my mind. After I woke the Hubster, we both began making phone calls. I called Karla (my midwife) at 2:40am. After a brief conversation, she told me she was on her way and encouraged me to make my way to the hospital. I then called my Mom and Dad to let them know–I’m not even sure the phone completed one ring before my mom answered and assured me…
