Bill Nye*
For the most part, I don’t enjoy lesson planning. I love teaching, but I don’t like the prepping part. It’s long, boring and tedious and usually not fun. Usually. I have been teaching a unit on climate in Geography–a subject I have not taken since I was in grade 9. It has been a big challenge for me as I am learning as I teach and most days I feel like I’m only staying about 5 minutes ahead of my kids. So, I have been leaning on external sources to increase my own knowledge and supplement my lessons. Tonight I rediscovered Bill Nye… and fell in love all over again.…

Spontaneous Dancing*
Today was a disaster. Not so much so that I’d call it an utter complete failure of a day, but enough so to make me question my abilities of classroom management (aka: making sure the kids don’t kill each other… or me). Right now I just want to put it all behind me and I’ll reflect on it more tomorrow when there is a bit of distance between myself and today. For now, I want to share something with you that makes me deliriously happy. A T-Mobile commercial recently came to my attention that I have fallen MADLY in love with. I like to believe that this was not planned…

The Intermediate Stand-Around*
Last week I chaperoned my very first high school dance and it was an interesting experience. Busting a kid for trying to sneak booze into the dance was definitely the highlight of the night, although the music was also great and all the kids danced and had a great time so it was fun to watch. Yesterday I got to see the flip side of the coin and chaperoned my first intermediate dance. Take a minute and think waaay back to your grade 7 and 8 days and reflect on your first “dance”… (Umm, yup, I couldn’t remember much either. haha) All week I had seen posters covering the intermediate…

The Booze Buster*
As I mentioned yesterday, last night I chaperoned my first high school dance. It was… magical. (Magical is my word for when there are no words. It just seems appropriate. haha) A friend of mine is actually at the same school as I am for placement, although she is in the high school division and I am working in intermediate. She was asked to chaperone the dance and I volunteered to as well. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect… when I was in high school in northern Ontario many moons ago, everyone went to dances. There wasn’t much else to do in the community, (not to mention it was…

Oh Puberty, Where Art thou?
As you know, I am currently teaching a grade 7 class. I had a really good day today–for the first time since entering their class I finally felt like a real teacher and not some random lady with big hair who has invaded their classroom. They turn to me for help, and they are also beginning to let me get to know them and are sharing their work and interests with me. It’s pretty cool. It also means that we are becoming “closer” as they accept me as their teacher… but also proximity wise as I often sit with them to assist them in math (…ha) or whatever they are…
