• A Summer of Dresses: Jordan*

Have you been to see my new post over at The Shoe Digest yet?? SO EXCITING. :)

My lovely friend Jordan actually emailed me her post over a week ago, but in the haze of my death cold I somehow overlooked it.

    *bows head in shame*

In any case, please take a moment and check out Jordan’s amazing dress–I’m seriously coveting it. I need a dress like this! New thrifting challenge? I think YES.

    —————-

Greetings to all you Shop Girl readers!

My name is Jordan and I am totally thrilled to be appearing on Shop Girl’s blog this week with a totally amazing dress that I simply adore! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been married for just under 5 years and have lived in 3 provinces and 5 cities during that time (we did a lot of cross country driving!). I am the mother of a very busy 1 year old boy and I’m expecting another baby boy this October. I work as a dance teacher and very passionate about all of the performing arts, and these days you can find me blogging at The Diary of a Dancer and a Frog Prince. While I’m originally from Ontario (Shop girl and I were friends in our single days!) I currently reside in Calgary Alberta.

And now onto my wonderful dress.

I saw this dress hanging on a rack in Winners 2 years ago and knew that I simply had to have it the moment I laid eyes on it! Yes, it was love at first sight. Normally I don’t pay full price for items…I tend to be a bargain hunter, but I was willing to pay the $30 price tag for this particular dress because I just LOVED it!  Why do I love this dress so much you ask? Here are my reasons:

    1) It’s long- and who doesn’t love a long breezy summer dress?!
    2) You can wear it with flats or heels- while I prefer the look with flats I have worn it with heels and I think it still looks great.
    3) It has a plethora of gorgeous colours making it super summery!
    4) I bought this dress when I was completely not pregnant but it magically still fit me when I was 36 weeks pregnant last summer!
    5) You can accessorize with a variety of coloured tops underneath to make it a little more modest and also a variety of jewellery styles.
    6) It’s super versatile. You can wear it to anything from a walk in the park, to church, to a summer dinner party.

What more could I ask for in a dress? I dare say… nothing!

    –Jordan

I intended to post this yesterday, but we got caught up in our Saturday activities, and I actually went out last night.

    For real.

I went out and saw some of my friends from my first university (Ghetto U) and it was fabulous. My beautiful friend Star is getting married this summer and last night we went out to celebrate and help her raise some money for her wedding.

Today I am introducing you to my lovely friend Lacey. Lacey is a friend of mine that I actually met through my book club! She is not a “blogger”, but she asked if she could participate in my Summer of Dresses Project and I was thrilled to say yes! If you’re interested in showing off your favourite dress, details are below Lacey’s super cute dress!

    —————-

    Hi everyone! I’m Lacey.

I bought this dress about two years ago.  At the time, I was very conservative in my wardrobe, always buying the same style of clothes in the same colours.  I was shopping one day with my mom and as I was in the change room finishing up, my mom brought me this dress and said she thought it might be “cute”. Since it was on the clearance rack and a great deal she thought I should try it on.  She passed it over the door, and when I saw it, I actually thought my mom was maybe a little crazy…it wasn’t like anything I owned and not really my style, but I decided to humour her.

As soon as I put it on, i knew it fit perfectly, but it was one of those change rooms that doesn’t have a mirror so it wasn’t until I came out and saw it in the mirror that I fell in love.  Even though this dress is maybe a little colourful or bold (for me), and completely different from what I would normally choose, I love wearing it.  The best part is that it was only $10 and I got an additional 20% off.

I usually wear this dress to work, and I usually keep the jewelry simple because I think the dress is pretty spectacular all on its own.  I love wearing dresses in general, because I like the idea that with only one piece of clothing you look completely “put together”, but I especially like this dress because it marked a change in the way I shop and buy clothes.  Since I bought this dress, I have started taking other chances with my wardrobe and trying new styles or colours.  I no longer judge things by how they look on the hanger, but generally give items a chance and try them on and I am so happy with the results that this new approach has had on my wardrobe.

I am so excited to introduce you to the next feature in my Summer of Dresses project! Today you’ll meet Steffi, the author of the fabulous Stylings of S. I have the pleasure of knowing Steffi in real life and I have always secretly admired her style and fashion sense.

I am seriously coveting this dress. xo

Shop Girl has been really great about spending very little on her dresses this summer season. I am jealous. I absolutely love thrift shopping (or swapping for that matter), and she’s found some great finds. I didn’t exactly go to the VV boutique for this dress, but I did manage to pull out a great dress (actually, my favourite dress!) from my closet at home. It’s like shopping in my own wardrobe!

I have had this dress for about 3 years… maybe even 4. I bought it in Senior’s City back in the undergrad days. It’s Nick and Mo (http://nickandmoclothes.com/) and I absolutely love it.

Nothing says summer to me like a bright yellow dress. I put it on to go to the Tulip Festival last Saturday and got a few “ohh I love your dress” comments. Who doesn’t  love that?!

Have you found anything in the back of your closet that you forgot you loved?

P.S.  I’m always blogging about my finds at Stylings of S! (http://stylingsofs.blogspot.com)

    Hello lovelies!!

I know my blogging has been a bit hodge podge lately, especially with my thrifting adventures. I promise to debut dress #3 before the week is out, and today I’m SO excited to continue my Summer of Dresses project with the fabulous Julie Bee!

    ———-

Hi everyone!! I’m Julie Bee from 101 Things in 1001 Days. I was totally pumped when Shop Girl asked me to be a guest blogger for her Summer of Dresses project. I immediately ran down to my closet and showed her all of the possible dresses that could be on her blog. Being close to 19 years old myself, I a few years ago I realized that I only owned 2 dresses… This. Was. An. Issue. I have church every Sunday and then many other activities that I have to wear semi-formal attire to. And I had next to nothing! Since then, I’ve been establishing quite the dress wardrobe. On my blog, I have a list of 101 goals to complete in 1001 days and one of them includes finding discount jeans. That is where my wardrobe lacks, in jeans… not in dresses.

I, unlike Shop Girl, am not so diligent at being thrifty. I usually buy dresses ranging from $30-$60, but after reading many of Shop Girl’s Thrifty Thursday posts, I decided to look past the strange ‘old lady’ smell of some of the thrift stores, and go for a look. My best friend, Brittany, brought me to Value Village one day when I was feeling particularly broke. I was laughing at most of the ridiculous dresses that were in the section, until I came across this one…

It is PURPLE. One of my favourite colours! With blue! My other favourite colour! It was absolutely fabulous. It was love at first sight. I couldn’t be more in love and then, I found them…

    The pockets.

I have a serious love for dresses with pockets. Why? Because it’s so awkward when you’re at an event and you want to leave your purse at your table or with your coat. But you want to bring your camera out onto the dance floor with you. PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR POCKETS! Unfortunately, most dresses and skirts don’t have them, so whenever I find dresses with pockets, I must have them. I also needed something fun like this to wear to the weddings I have to attend this summer (but I’m sure I’ll go looking for something new if I get the chance…)

I wear this dress with a plain white tee underneath, for modesty and warmth. I then pair it with some white flats that my sister gave me! It’s such a fun outfit fun and I totally love it!

Now I’m sure this whole post you’ve been wondering how much I payed for this beauty..

    8 dollars.

    8 dollars?!

    8 DOLLARS!

I was feeling broke that day, but I couldn’t leave it behind for 8 dollars! I was expecting it to be at least $15. I’ve only had this dress for a few months, but the memories that I currently have include my trip to Utah with my family, where the first photo was taken. I’ve worn it a few times now and I’m looking forward to making many memories with this dress.

If you want to learn more about my trip to Utah or my 101 list, feel free to take a peak at my blog!

    Hi Lovelies!!

And so, without any further ado… I give you the oh-so-lovely Joanna! Let the Summer of Dresses begin!!

    —————-

Hey guys, I’m Joanna and I’m so glad to be here at I Heart My Shoes ’cause guess what, I really like shoes too!
    I mean really.
    Especially boots! I don’t think I’ve met a pair I don’t like.
And I own waaay too many.
Although, can you really have too many shoes?
    Sorry, I digress.

Anyway, I write a little blog called Modamama all about life, being a young mom, and my many fashion misadventures.  And I was honored to be asked to write about my favorite dress.  So without further ado, here it is.

If there was a fire and I could only save one dress, this would be the one. *though why am I saving a dress of all things in this hypothetical fire, I don’t know* Considering I have about 90 or so dresses, calling this my favorite says a lot.   It was a purchase I made in Barcelona during my three months of bumming around Europe.  When I saw it, I immediately fell in love.  The bright colors and the bold pattern make it a dramatic dress to wear, and the little ruffle on the bottom add a flirty, feminine feel that I just love.  But more than that, I dragged this dress to many a Spanish beach, and to so many wonderfully decadent dinners with my husband that now those memories are ingrained into the very fabric of the dress itself.  When I wear it, I can almost smell the salty ocean and taste the fresh seafood.  It’s wonderful when a piece of clothing can transport you into another time and place like that.

Since there’s so many beautiful memories attached to this dress for both myself and Husband, it was fitting that I wore it to take him out for a birthday meal.  The weather wasn’t so nice that day, so I styled it with a pair of fabulous boots *what else?* and a boyfriend blazer.  I like to have contrast and dichotomy in my outfits; so pairing a feminine dress with a masculine blazer was right up my alley.  Now, I often wear a belt with a dress, but the fabric here is so soft and falls so well that I didn’t want to mess with the silhoutte at all.  And I also didn’t want to break the flow of the pattern.   I enjoy just showing off the dress without getting in it’s way.

Stop by my blog anytime to see what other things I’m wearing and writing about and we’ll chat.  Thanks so much!

    Joanna*
