Shop Girl Shares United Breaks Guitars and Joel Plaskett*

Hi lovelies!

I’m so sorry for being such a terrible blogger this week–life was busy, busy, busy! As you know I was in B-Town last weekend for Peeah’s baby shower, then I was only home for 3 days before hitting the road again! At 6:30am on Thursday I was on the road heading up to the Great White North (which is actually looking pretty green this time of year, but Great Green North just doesn’t do it for me. haha!). I had a wonderful weekend with the family as we got together to celebrate my Aunt & Uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary. Some of the highlights include:

*Bowling–I rocked a high score of 111.
*Midnight poutine… at 8:30pm.
*Great conversation
*Seeing my fabulous cousins
*Raiding my 93 year old Grammy’s underwear drawer for a slip to avoid a major wardrobe malfunction. haha

All in all, it was a great trip. I had hoped to write about it last night but didn’t get until after 10pm… after 11 hours on the road. Needless to say, I was just a little bit tuckered out.

SO, here I am today with another installation of Shop Girl Shares! I had a great response to last week’s post, so as this is just week two I’ve decided to share TWO things with you again! Aren’t I just so thoughtful, and caring, and nice… and humble? Ha. I’m feeling very musical today so I am sharing two things I love.

#1: United Song 1 (United Breaks Guitars)

At some point during our long, long road trip this weekend Spart shared a marvelous story with Peeah and I. I have to be honest–I’m not really a big country / folk fan, so I don’t follow country news or music. I don’t mind some of the newer stuff and Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood don’t make me want to claw my eyes out, but it’s one genre that I’ve never really connected with. So, I didn’t feel terrible when I admitted to her that I didn’t know who the Sons of Maxwell well were and hadn’t heard why they had attracted international attention. She was quick to fill me in… and as she isn’t here to retell the story, I thought Dave Carroll (lead singer of the Sons of Maxwell) could tell you better than I could:

In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn’t deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say “no” to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. I promise.

You can read all the gory details here, but you get the gist of it. So, they did what they do best and made a glorious song detailing the tragic story of the death of Dave Carroll’s Taylor guitar. (*moment of silence please*) Anyway, I thought the video was a riot and has already had more than 3,000,000 hits! Watch, and love:

I love when musicians use their talent to tell stories and garner attention for certain issues. LOVE. The Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice” is fabulous.

#2: Joel Plaskett

I also want to leave you with one of my most favourite artists who is slowing becoming more well known (and also happens to be Canadian! WOO!): Joel Plaskett.

I love this man and his sweater vest (see video below). In any case, he is very tall and makes glorious music. If you haven’t heard of him, take a listen below… seriously. He’s very creative and just, well, awesome. LOVE IT.

P.s. I am like THIS close to my 500th post… is there anything you reeeally wanna know about me that I might be coerced into writing about for said post? Lemme know, I’m open to suggestions. ;)
