Our Story

Chapter Twenty* Hubster vs. Big Dad [Round Two]

I know I left the last chapter at an ‘inopportune’ moment for many of my lovely readers. So, without any further ado…

This is the story of how the Hubster and I met, fell in love, and were married within 8 months…

…and lived happily every after*

Let me introduce our contenders: (you can click on pictures to enlarge them)

The Hubster ———————– Big Dad
vs.
Mom: So, did you two want to talk to us about something?

The Dad Face focuses on the Hubster.

Hubs: Well, uh, yes. I would like to marry your daughter and was hoping to get your blessing.

Big Dad: Well, okay. First (looking at me) have you talked to Shop Girl about this?

Me: Oh yes Dad. We’ve discussed it.

Big Dad: And?

Me: I like it. :)

Big Dad: Well Hubs, what are your plans for the future? Do you plan to just continue working, or school, or…?

Hubs: I plan on attending school for business in the fall… right now I’m just working to save as much as I can.

The Dad Face relaxes a little.

Mom: And would you be able to afford this? A wedding? An apartment? Marriage?

Hubs: Well, I have a great job, and, like I said, I’m putting pretty well everything away into the bank right now. I’m going to work as much as I can through the summer and hopefully through the school year as well. With the both of us working through the summer we’ll have enough to cover our expenses and still have a little left over.

Big Dad nods.

Mom: Well Hubs, we don’t know you terribly well yet as we’ve only visited a few times and it’s always pretty crazy around here when you come. But before I say anything else I’d love to hear what it is you love about my daughter.

Hubs: (looking at me) I love spending time with her… she makes me so happy. I enjoy every minute with her. I love her personality and spirit.

Mom: And Shop Girl… tell me why you love the Hubster.

Me: (looking at him) I love everything about him… I love who he is and what he stands for. I love that he is honest with me, and he is a wonderful listener. I love how he makes me laugh… and he makes me so happy.

Big Dad: Are you two planning on being married in the temple?

Hubs: Yes, we are.

Big Dad: I don’t see a ring on her finger… have you asked her yet?

Hubs: No, not yet. Shop Girl and I have discussed it, but I wanted to speak with you before moving forward. I know that we haven’t been dating for very long, and I just wanted you to know that my intentions are honorable and that I love your daughter very much.

Mom: Well… I know that Shop Girl doesn’t make a decision without carefully weighing everything out– she always has. So if this is what she wants, then I know that this is right for her. We can’t really say anything about how long you’ve known each other, as I’m sure Shop Girl has told you that Big Dad and I dated for only 6 weeks before getting engaged and we’ve been married for nearly 30 years now.

Hubs: haha… yeah.

Mom: I can see that you love each other… just hang on to that. And keep talking to each other. You have some big decisions ahead.

Hubs: Thank you.

The Dad Face shifts into Proud Dad Face.

Big Dad: Well, (standing and extending his hand), you’ve got my blessing to marry my daughter if you’d like it. I don’t know you really well yet, but I’m sure there will be lots of time for that in the future.

Hubs: (taking Dad’s hand in a firm handshake) Thank you, Big Dad.

Big Dad: Now you’d better buy her a ring. ;)

…and he did. :)
