We had a long night.
I mentioned that he had his four month check up on Friday, and with that came his next round of routine vaccinations. One of the vaccines he received was a second dose to protect against Rotavirus. The doctor warned me that he could experience a mild upset stomach and vomiting for a few days, but he didn’t react at all to his first dose so I wasn’t worried.
On Friday night he spiked a low fever. This is pretty a common side effect to vaccinations– especially since he had had three in total that day. He was a little uncomfortable, so I gave him some baby Tylenol to help settle him… which he promptly puked back up. I thought it was more him not liking the Tylenol than anything else.
He was a little out of sorts all day yesterday. He had an amazing nap in the morning, but when he woke up I could tell he wasn’t quite himself. He didn’t want to eat, he was irritable and he kept arching his back like he does when he has gas. He was exhausted by bedtime, but again, he just couldn’t settle.
The Tylenol experience was not one I was keen to repeat, so I tried Gripe Water. Within a minute of taking it, he threw up everywhere. He cried then vomited again, then as soon as it was out he seemed fine again.
Then I realized that he was probably reacting to the vaccine. We kept him up a bit, then he fell asleep on my shoulder and I put him to bed. It was almost an exact replica of what had happened the night before, and after throwing up he slept through the night… so I wondered if he would do the same again.
Nope. He did not.
My poor little man was up at 12, 2, and again at 4, when he threw up everywhere again. I had to recruit M to come help because I was so tired and had vomit in places you shouldn’t have vomit.
(Which, to be honest, is anywhere. You shouldn’t ever have vomit anywhere. )
He finally settled back into bed at 5:30am, and I collapsed in a heap with him. M got up with him when he woke again at 6:30 so that I could sleep a bit more, but we’re all a little tired today.
I’m hoping that the worst is out of his system now, but the internet tells me the reactions typically last a few days. If he’s still vomiting tomorrow I think I might just check in with my doctor, but hopefully today / tonight is better.
He’s still his regular happy self for the most part… Just with a side of upset stomach.
Nap for me today, friends. I will sleep vicariously through you.
